Night will start with a structured panel with open floor Q&A followed by catered networking.

The event aims to connect students with professionals in the post-mine transitions space, providing education on the processes involved and showcasing career opportunities within the sector.  

240 mines are projected to close in Australia by 2040 (CSIRO, 2024). All mines close, but few close well. We need effective planning throughout the life of mine to minimise long-term impacts, helping us responsibly produce the critical minerals required to support the renewable energy transition. To improve the status quo, we also need to meet the workforce of the future.

In this event, we’ll chat about:

• what sorts of roles will be needed as mines close and make way for renewable energy farms, agricultural land, recreational lakes and other post-mine activities. Just what does it take to rehabilitate with future purposes in mind?
• what are the economic skills needs in quantifying risk, valuing natural capital, and modelling closure?
• what part do the social sciences play in supporting regional communities and Aboriginal community members and businesses to achieve their aspirations for the future?
• how can policymakers and regulators help ease the way for new opportunities to arise?
