ResourceSmart Schools Sharing Skills: CREATE with RSS

CREATE (Co-operation, Relationships, Engagement, Adventure, Teamwork, Enjoyment) was developed by Wendouree Primary School six years ago to engage a group of students who had a difficult time focusing within the traditional classroom setting. Beginning with twice weekly one-hour sessions of selected students working with the school’s Garden and Maintenance Officer, the program's impact was quickly recognised so it was expanded to include more students and a greater range of activities. Following the return to the classroom after Covid-19, the school identified a greater need for a program to assist with student engagement and social reconnection. The program has now expanded to include Kitchen and Garden Specialists, STEM teachers and classroom aides running weekly sessions.

Join us to explore how CREATE has evolved into a valuable whole-school resource that embeds sustainability in the school culture and includes multiple staff and curriculum areas. With over 25% of the school cohort involved, it has allowed students at risk of disengaging with their education to instead gain a vast array of life skills to foster a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment. These sessions now include cooking, art, 3D printing, animal husbandry, recess programs, construction and gardening maintenance.

This event is an ideal opportunity for all teachers seeking structure around building sustainability into alternative programs and how to incorporate ResourceSmart Schools into the planning process.
