Event description

How can art, science, and design come together to envision a resilient future coastline? Come and explore imaginative designs by landscape architecture students from the UWA School of Design, exhibited alongside captivating community artworks that celebrate the coast from Fremantle to Naval Base. The exhibition will be open for viewing daily between Sunday 27 April and Thursday 1 May between 10am and 3pm.

This exhibition is an output of the UWA Oceans Institute’s innovative ‘Better Oceans Program’ research project to improve coastal resilience through creative methods of community engagement. As part of the project, community members from the Cockburn region were invited to create collages, textile artworks, and photographs that tell their stories about the Cockburn coastline. You will see their artworks and the story behind the art in this novel exhibition.

If you would like to have a go at creating your own collage, come along on Sunday 27 April during the exhibition opening hours (10am-3pm). You can register to attend the drop-in collage activity here on Humanitix, but you are also welcome to just turn up on the day (activity only available on Sunday 27 April). Participation will be available subject to table space - you may need to wait for a turn if it is busy. We will provide a small postcard-size base board and plenty of materials for you to use to create a collage which you can take home. Expected time to complete a collage is 15-30 minutes depending on the amount of detail you want to include in your design. Children are very welcome but will need to be supervised and assisted by their own accompanying adults.

Exhibition entry is free, as is participation in the collage activity.

The exhibition 'Rising Tides: Imagining Coastal Resilience' will be open to the public between Sunday 27 April to Thursday 1 May 2025, from 10am-3pm daily. This event is supported by the City of Cockburn. This research project is funded by the UWA Oceans Institute's Better Oceans Program. The project is an endorsed United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development Action. The 'Rising Tides Studio' is an initiative of the UWA School of Design.
