    Event description

So, you’ve got a great idea for a trail – what next?

Coming up with an idea for a trail project is easy – but turning a great idea into reality can be challenging. Land managers and trail proponents may face a range of issues that need to be addressed long before shovels start hitting the dirt.

In this webinar Dr Lenore Lyons, Senior Research Associate at Outdoors Great Southern in Western Australia and founder of Trail Futures, examines the common pitfalls encountered in the planning stages of trail projects; identifies ways to ensure that these problems don’t continue during the construction phase; and outlines strategies and solutions to ensure that your trail project is a success. Drawing on her experience on a range of trail-related projects in the Great Southern, including hiking and mountain biking trails, Lenore will discuss best practice approaches to trail planning and project management. This webinar is aimed at anyone interested in developing a new trail project, including land managers, local government staff, trail user groups and clubs, and environmental and conservation groups.

Dr Lenore Lyons is the former Chief Executive Officer of Outdoors Great Southern, an award-winning not-for-profit outdoor recreation organisation based in Albany, Western Australia. Lenore established Outdoors Great Southern (then known as the Great Southern Centre for Outdoor Recreation Excellence or GSCORE) in 2017, and over five years, grew the organisation to include a team focused on three core program areas – trail planning and project management, volunteer trail maintenance, and outdoor recreation community programs for kids and adults.

Dr Lyons was instrumental in the production of the Great Southern's Regional Trails Master Plan, working with state and local land owners and managers across 11 shires to map out the region's existing infrastructure and identify opportunities for growth and improvement. The planning document was launched in September 2020 and continues to inform ongoing trail maintenance and development across the region.

The inspiration behind Trail Futures, Lenore continues to be involved in the trails sector as a project management consultant and researcher. Prior to joining Outdoors Great Southern, Lenore worked in the university sector as a research scientist, and established and ran a successful eco-tourism business. A former Board Director of the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation, Trails WA, and Outdoors WA, she is currently Deputy Chairperson of Australia’s South West.
