Learn how to write unforgettable characters.

Want to create characters your readers can’t stop thinking about? In this workshop you’ll discover how to do exactly that - through various writing activities that effortlessly encourage your characters to reveal to you who they really are. Enjoy learning tips, tools, and techniques for discovering more about your characters’ qualities, complexities, prior experiences, and preferences. You will also learn how characterisation affects plot, and specific techniques to efficiently and effectively show vs tell - through the use of possessions, roles, actions, other characters' responses, dialogue, and gestures - in ways that make your stories unforgettable!

       

Learning Outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

  • Explore exercises for creating compelling characters

  • Learn techniques for enriching writing

  • Distinguish between flat vs rounded characters

  • Develop confidence in writing individual characters

      

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at Helensvale Cultural Centre, Gold Coast. This workshop is suitable for fiction writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.

About Melaina

Melaina Faranda is the author of seventy books, published nationally and internationally, a trained teacher, manuscript appraisal consultant, and storyteller who performs in Australia and overseas. Melaina offers decades of experience teaching: creative writing, editing, and storytelling skills, and infuses her presentations and workshops with vitality, generosity, and infectious enthusiasm and fun! She works with numerous organisations, writers' groups, schools, libraries, and literature festivals across Australia - delivering workshops, masterclasses, and retreats that result in rave feedback and repeat invitations.
