Creating Cultures of Belonging: Inclusive Language and Practices
Workshop details
This interactive workshop supports PhD students and researchers to reflect on how the language they use and the way they interact with others shape belonging, collaboration, and inclusion within research environments. Grounded in an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) framework, the session explores how researchers can foster more inclusive, respectful, and supportive laboratory and research cultures through everyday communication.
Through discussion, reflection, and practical activities, participants will explore inclusive language, psychological safety, cultural responsiveness, and respectful communication. The workshop will provide evidence-informed strategies to strengthen collaboration, navigate diverse perspectives, and contribute to research environments where colleagues, students, and collaborators feel valued, respected, and supported.
Participants will develop a personalised action plan with practical strategies to strengthen inclusion and belonging within their own research context.
Facilitators
A/Prof. Betty Exintaris, Monash University
Betty Exintaris is a urology researcher by training and a passionate, dedicated and innovative educator with over 20 years teaching experience in higher education. In her academic careers Betty has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to improving the overall student experience through the development of teaching resources, training and engagement programs and embedding skills in undergraduate curriculum. Her contributions have been recognised both nationally and internationally through multiple awards, grants and invited conference presentations. The impact of her teaching and has been formally recognised in the following ways: - Awarded the Australian Society for Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology (ASCEPT) Gillian Shenfield award in 2018 - Awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2019 - Received a Faculty award for Programs that Enhances Learning in 2020 Betty’s education research interests include building resilience, easing transition burden for first year university students and supporting international students. Betty is also a member of GRiT, a team of global experts interested in building a community of practice for resilience. She is also a co-creator and co-Lead of the PIES Engagement Program at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. This engagement program aims foster a sense of belonging for international students at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Betty also currently leads a research laboratory focused on prostate physiology and disease at Monash University.
Dr. Nilushi Karunaratne, Monash University
Nel is a scientist by training, having receiving a BBiomedSc (Hons) from The University of Melbourne and a PhD in Drug Discovery Biology, from Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia. She is currently a Lecturer at Monash University with expertise in curriculum design and implementation and physiology and pharmacology undergraduate teaching. The impact of her teaching and has been formally recognised with the following awards: - Faculty Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2017) - Monash Vice-Chancellor Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2018) - Faculty Award for Programs that Enhances Learning (2020) Nilushi's expertise also extends to education research. Her research interests include international students’ engagement and sense of belonging, teamwork behaviour in undergraduate students and impact of resilience and self-regulated learning on academic achievement. Within her academic role, Nilushi is also the Co-creator and Co-Lead of the PIES Engagement Program at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. This engagement program aims foster a sense of belonging for international students at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Future pharmacist and lifelong humanitarian. She is a fifth-year student at Monash University with dreams of improving medical care for the global population by expanding the reach of healthcare professionals to parts of the world that may be less wealthy or well-known.
