Description

How do you protect what really matters in someone’s life? Find out in this full day practical workshop, for people with disabilities and their families and allies. Learn how to anticipate, plan for and reduce risks, while working towards full and meaningul lives in community. This workshop covers individual vulnerability and risk, and what really protects people and what doesn’t. You will leave with pro-active strategies and practical steps to strengthen the foundations of a good life.

This workshop has been co-designed by people with disability and their family members, and is intended to motivate and help you by sharing real life knowledge, experiences, and strategies.

At this workshop you will:
  • Recognise the essential role of people and community in safeguarding.

  • Develop safeguards tailored to an individual’s vulnerabilities and risks.

  • Identify what protects people, and what doesn’t.

  • Build on and strengthen safeguards you may already have in place.

  • See and hear examples of practical strategies of safeguarding.

  • Connect and learn from others.

Who Should Attend?

People with disability, families of people with disability, supporters/allies of people with disability.


Cost to attend:

People with disability and family members:

·         Standard price for this workshop is $30.

·         If the cost is a barrier, please choose the Concession Rate, $10.

·         If you would like to support CRU’s work you can choose the Supporter Rate, $50.

Workers, friends and allies:

·         The price for workers, professionals, friends and allies is $100.

Every person who attends needs to register.

Due to venue and catering costs, CRU is not able to fully participate in the companion card scheme, however, if a worker is attending to provide support for an attendee with disability, we will offer a reduced fee at the standard rate. 

Using Your NDIS Funding at CRU

For self-managing and plan-managed NDIS participants, you can see the Learning Objectives below to decide if this is a reasonable and necessary support to help you (or your family member) achieve their goals.

Learning Objectives 
  • Explore ways to understand and manage vulnerability and risk.

  • Understanding the role of people, relationships, and community as safeguards.

  • Recognise how safeguards exist to protect and enable the Good Life.

  • Identify ways to centre the voice and build the self-capacity of people with disability in safeguarding.

  • Apply practical and pro-active strategies and tools for safeguarding.

For over 35 years, Community Resource Unit has been working across Queensland to help people with disability take control of their lives and take their place in their community. 

This event is supported by a Peer Support and Capacity Building (PSCB) grant for the NDIS.
