Event description

Come along to The Social Studio for a deep dive into fashion upcycling where you'll learn the basics to repair your clothes, revamp them with new print designs, and hear from local upcyclers and designers about the future of textile's repurposing. All experience levels in fashion upcycling are welcome!

Make sure to bring along any old garments that you want to repair or add designs to, but if you don't have anything, we'll have some on the day for you to use!

The workshop will involve breaking into two groups and rotating between workshops, with lunch and a panel discussion with our workshop instructors and guest speakers in between. Read on for more detail:

Creative Mending Class
Got garments hiding in the back of your wardrobe thanks to holes, stains or missing buttons? Bring them along and learn how to give them a new lease on life using simple, creative mending techniques. No sewing experience needed! In this hands-on part of the workshop, Seren Paing from The Social Studio will teach you the basics of hand stitching, patching, visible mending and button repair—breathing fresh life into old favourites while keeping textiles out of landfill.

Screen-Printing Class

Want to revamp and reinspire your old garments with a new design? In this aspect of the workshop, you'll get the chance to add custom screen-printed designs to your clothes with guidance from Felix Toohey who founded No Bull Cause, a small fashion brand reinventing apparel through custom screen-printing and dying and changing the way we look at our old clothes (literally!)

Textile Upcycling Discussion Panel

In between both workshops, we'll break for lunch (our shout!) and have a casual chat on the future of textile upcycling and our role in making change happen with our workshop instructors and Yesha Patel from After, who co-founded Australia’s first textile recycling pick-up service.

Please note that your ticket price covers materials we need to run the workshop, and all proceeds will be donated to The Social Studio in support of their mission to create education and employment pathways for migrants and refugees.
