Creative Writing: It Starts with a Letter with Saskia

When was the last time you wrote or received a letter? Have you ever written or received a letter? Do you know how ?
In today's digital age we are faced with a barrage of information constantly 24/7 from the devices in our pockets. These are the same devices we use as our primary mode of communication. Because of this technology we are able to talk to or message another person instantly whenever and wherever. It is incredibly convenient. But what are we sacrificing for this convenience?
For much of human history letters have been the primary mode of correspondence between friends, family, lovers, neighbours and strangers. While they do not offer the same instantaneous connection as other technology, what they do offer is far more meaningful.
In It Starts With a Letter, you are invited to pause, reflect and slow down. To purposefully consider the communication you engage in, how it aids in creating meaningful connection with your community and yourselves, and how adopting the practice of letter writing can provide an antidote to the fast-paced, convenience focused noise of everyday life.
Pens, paper, envelopes and stamps will all be provided! All you need is yourselves, an open heart and perhaps a willingness to leave your phone on silent for the duration of the class.
What will we cover?
In this class we will cover:
- A brief historical context of human correspondence and letter writing.
- Look at some example letters from history, what they can tell us and why they are important
- Tips and tricks for writing letters and maintaining letter correspondence in your day-to-day lives
- Time to write your very own letter !

Who will be Teaching?
Saskia is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts at Victoria University, majoring in History. Outside of her degree Saskia's interests lie in reading, writing and engaging with as much arts and culture as possible! She is happiest when she is at the theatre, the cinema or watching a gig at her local pub. As a history major Saskia feels particularly aware of the general public's opinion on history being 'boring'. She hopes that through targeted research and curation to deliver meaningful hands-on workshops, she can make history more accessible to a wider audience and incite within them their own passion for history. Or at the very least, a greater appreciation. Connection with community is one of Saskia’s core values and the main driver of the work she strives to deliver. This purpose has guided her desire to deliver this workshop, as well as an experienced connection with letters and letter-writing in her personal life.
