Creative Writing: ‘Mood’ and the ‘Body Language’ of Prose with Liliane (Online)
Event description
Some writing conjures a mood that perfectly expresses the dynamics of the story; other writing leaves you flat or at a distance from the characters and events. Discover how masterful authors subtly work with language via the ‘subtext of subtext’: the ‘body language’ of prose.
What will we cover?
How do you conjure ‘mood’ in a story? What do sentence structure and punctuation have to do with it? How does the breakdown of spoken communication (words, tonality and body language) relate to written text? In this session you will consider a number of examples from classic and popular fiction that demonstrate the mood and ‘subtext’ generated by sentence structure, and have a go at applying these principles yourself. You’ll also discover the powerful distinctions between the four punctuation modes of a statement, question, exclamation and command.
What to bring
A notebook and pen are ideal, or your device if that's your preference.
