Campbelltown Creek Geeks
Description
This activity blends play, learning and community using an existing nature play area near one of the cooling veins of our City – Fourth Creek / Morialta Parri!
We’d love our local families to join us in this event to learn more about how to keep creeks healthy, playing in and around the creek and our Nature Play Trail, and connecting to the local environment. There’ll be the opportunity for kids to plant alongside the creek, take home their own seed in a pot to watch it grow, and learn from creek experts.
Whilst the event is suited to kids aged 5-11, we will have some activities for the younger siblings too.
Read the timeline of the event for more details!
We're pleased to have Green Adelaide local experts attending this Campbelltown City Council initiative.
Timeline of the morning
- 9:45 am - 10:00 am
Arrival & get settled
Get yourself to the area, sign in, and go to the toilet before we start! Carpark entrance 172 Montacute Road. Or you can park further up Fourth creek and wander / cycle down the trail. Meet by the bridge, we will have an marquee!
- 10:00 am - 10:15 am
Orientation
We'll welcome you to the space, what we're doing today, and introduce you to Steve Walker, Adelaide's Frog Man! You might like to bring a picnic rug.
- 10:15 am - 10:45 am
Planting!
Our Biodiversity Team will provide demonstrations of how to plant a seedling out of a plastic tube, and then each child will get to plant at least one along Fourth Creek. Everyone will then plant a seed (something to take home) so you can plant it when it's grown up! The crew will also teach you about weeds, and you can go on a hunt for some in the area!
- 10:45 am - 11:15 am
Geek out with Steve
A chance to sit while Steve Walker from Green Adelaide chats about all the different plants and critters found in creeks and their importance in a healthy creek system. This will be a fun interactive learning session where you will come out of it feeling confident about being in and around creeks with water or without. (BYO snacks and water bottles).
- 11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Nature Play!
Time for free play in the creek - Steve will show you some ways to collect invertebrates from the water! It could be muddy, and slippery. Practice looking for things and feeling stable in water (suited for target audience kids aged 5-11) or hang out in the nature play area, making potions (suited for younger kids that come along). We'll have a biodiversity bingo for Fourth Creek that you can play, which will encourage observations all around.

FAQs
- What should I bring?
Please bring for your child:
morning tea snacks
water bottles
gum boots / waterproof clothing
a basket / bag / small container that will be able to carry home a small seed planted
picnic rug
change of clothes
- Where will the closest toilets be?
The closest toilets will be in the adjacent Campbelltown Function Centre.
There will be an event going on during the day, but we will be able to use the toilets, and we will mark which entrance you can use.
- Do I need to register children under 5?
There is an option for number of children to register aged 5-11, and an option for 'number of children under 5' - so we can get a sense of number of people in the space.
You are welcome to bring these younger ones but the focus will be for their older siblings. They can still get involved with planting and other activities like potion making. Feel free to bring a picnic rug, pram and other things to keep your youngsters entertained.
- Is this a drop in activity?
No, this activity is best if you can be there the whole time. We have spaced it so there'll be several different sequential activities.
If you arrive late, please expect to join in the part we are up to! Details are in the event timeline.
- I can't come, but this looks great, can I come another time?
The nature play area is always there, and we encourage families to come and hang out here anytime. We are across the main road from the Library too.
- How should I get to the event?
If you live near Fourth Creek, this is an excellent opportunity to walk / cycle up the trail. Whilst it is a mix of walking on footpath or street, it is fairly quiet and you will see so many birds and other wildlife along the way. There is also a playground nearby so if you go past that on the way, factor in detours.
The event space is also immediately adjacent to the carpark, put 172 Montacute Road into your GPS.
There is also a bus along Montacute Road that stops conveniently outside Council offices too, bus 178, stop 23.
The carpark will be quite full, as there will also be an event for senior citizens all day in the Campbelltown Function Centre. Consider parking on one of the side streets on the opposite side of the creek (i.e. Leabrook, Horwood Ave, Redwood St, Rostrevor Ave).
- Will you have coffee there?
No we will not provide coffee.
There's a great cafe 'Baretto' nearby to pop in on the way. Or BYO.
- What is the intention of the event?
To provide a kids activity for locals as part of Nature Festival.
To link it to the things people value in our area and teach about the importance of our creeklines, nature, biodiversity and trees, and what it would be like without them.
For families to feel inspired to take action in their own homes or communities.
To rehabilitate the creek with revegetation and removal of some weeds!
To encourage safe and nature friendly play in creeklines.
