Description
Did you know that Archerfield Wetlands was once the site of the Oxley Bacon Factory? Operating on the banks of Oxley Creek from 1904 to 1992, the factory shaped the surrounding environment for almost a century. Today, the only trace of the wetlands' industrial past is a network of man-made ponds.
The Brisbane Sustainability Agency (BSA) along with the Oxley Creek Catchment Association (OCCA) are converting these ponds back into a natural wetland ecosystem through the Northern Ponds Wetland Habitat Transformation project. But we need your help!
Join us in our outdoor lab near the site of the former Oxley Bacon Factory to look at macroinvertebrates under the microscope. Learn how these water bugs are connected within the ecosystem and what they reveal about healthy wetlands.
This is an outdoor, hands-on, family-friendly workshop suitable for kids aged 6 and up accompanied by a parent/guardian.

- Where is the event being held?
This event is being held within the northern section of the Archerfield Wetlands along the walking track. The meeting location and a map will be distributed before the event, but please be advised that the event is a 1 km walk (flat/gravel) from Gleneagles Crescent or a 2 km walk (also flat/paved/gravel) from the Wetlands Community Hub.
- Where are the nearest toilets?
The nearest toilets are located at the Wetlands Community Hub.
- Can my children be left unattended during the event?
Please no.
- What should I wear?
Clothes you don't mind getting wet, possibly muddy.
Weather appropriate clothing.
We will be working under a gazebo, but bring sun smart clothing.
