Crime Scene Documentation

Crime scenes are documented under pressure, often by personnel who never received formal training in photography, sketching, or evidence marking. When documentation falls short, cases become vulnerable. Defense attorneys look for gaps in scale references, inconsistent photo sequencing, and sketches that fail to establish a scene's true layout, and those gaps can undo an otherwise solid investigation.

Crime Scene Documentation gives investigators and crime scene personnel a systematic method for documenting a scene, evidence, and persons from arrival through case file. Participants leave with a repeatable process for photographing evidence, applying scales and markers correctly, and producing sketches and measurements that hold up in court.

The course is led by Sheila Lustigman, a civilian Crime Scene Investigator and Evidence Specialist with 23 years in law enforcement, 18 of them with the Coral Springs Police Department. Lustigman built this course around the same equipment, evidence marking, and photography standards she has used and taught throughout her career, so what participants learn matches what actually holds up when a case reaches court.

Who Should Attend All members of the criminal justice community. Training is especially valuable for personnel involved in crime scene investigations, including patrol officers, evidence technicians, and CSI personnel.

Your Instructor Sheila Lustigman holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology from Florida State University and has served as a civilian Crime Scene Investigator and Evidence Specialist in law enforcement for 23 years, 18 of them with the Coral Springs Police Department. In 2004, she became Supervisor of the Crime Scene Investigations Unit and Evidence Unit and holds Evidence Specialist certification through the International Association for Property & Evidence and the Property & Evidence Association of Florida. She has lectured for the Florida Police Accreditation Association on Property and Evidence Accreditation Success, has instructed with the Broward Institute for Public Safety since 2003, and currently serves as President of the Property and Evidence Association of Florida.
