Event description

Overview

Workshop 1: Criminal Records: Big Picture Assessments

This is the first workshop of the ‘Inside Out’ series. If understanding criminal records is one of the requirements of your role, this workshop is for you.

Correctly interpreting a person’s criminal record can be complicated even for those with a legal background. There are different types of criminal records and the way that offences, court appearances and outcomes are formatted and recorded will vary.

Reading a criminal record correctly is an essential skill for all workers, particularly those involved in intake and the assessment of a person’s eligibility for a service. To support the sectors’ commitment to improving service access experiences for people from populations over-represented in the criminal justice system, this one-day workshop will provide both legal information and case study-based skills application and reflection sessions.

In the morning session, Helen Shaw experienced criminal law solicitor with the Community Legal Education Branch, Legal Aid NSW unpacks commonly used terms and formats in client’s records and refreshes our understanding of common charges, reporting responsibilities and legal considerations.

The participants will have the opportunity to utilise case studies to workshop: -

  • Application of the morning’s knowledge
  • Criminal justice from a restorative and social justice lens
  • Contexts for consideration
  • Techniques for having conversations about a person’s record
  • Trauma-informed approach to risk assessment
