Critical AI Literacy Through Making: Teaching Authorship When the Tool Writes First with Tati Lathipatud Durriyah
Description
Join the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs' Equality Development and Globalization Studies (EDGS) program for a public talk by Tati Lathipatud Durriyah, Associate Professor and Head of the MA in Education program at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) and current Buffett-EDGS Visiting Scholar.
Generative AI now often produces a draft before a learner has written a word. What does it mean to teach authorship under those conditions? In this talk, Tati Lathipatud Durriyah, Buffett-EDGS Visiting Scholar at the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, draws on the learning sciences tradition of “making,” or learning through the construction of artifacts, and on critical accounts of it. She proposes that critical AI literacy can be practiced and assessed through the work of correcting what the tool produces.
Prof. Durriyah’s analysis centers on a master’s course in which six practicing educators from Asia and Africa designed bilingual picturebooks with generative AI, each for one specific child they know. Along the way, they documented what they had to correct. She suggests that the teacher’s knowledge of a specific child gives that correction its standard, and that the labor becomes assessable when students are required to record it. Grounded in the experience of Global South educators, the talk also asks whether human-centered AI is necessarily equity-centered AI.
Prof. Durriyah is an associate professor and head of the MA in Education program at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia in Depok, where her research addresses literacies (reading, multimodal, and digital literacy) and sociocultural theories of learning.
