Cross-Culture Communication and Anti-Racist Language

Explore how communication styles, cultural differences and language can affect relationships and experiences in the workplace. This practical session will help participants communicate more effectively across cultures, engage more confidently with people from different backgrounds and recognise language that may be inappropriate or exclusionary.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

• Better understand how culture can influence communication styles and behaviours.

• Recognise how differences in communication can affect working relationships, services and organisational environments.

• Feel more confident communicating and engaging with people from different cultural backgrounds.

• Develop greater awareness of how language around race and ethnicity changes over time.

• Be better able to recognise and avoid inappropriate, outdated or potentially harmful language.

• Apply more inclusive and anti-racist approaches to communication within their own role and organisation.

About the facilitator

Pheona Matovu is Strategic Director and co-founder of Radiant and Brighter CIC. The organisation works to promote cultural understanding, diversity and inclusion and provides training designed to help organisations better understand and engage with Scotland’s increasingly diverse communities.
