This course has given me increased confidence in interacting with others and a better understanding of what it means to be an active part of the union.
Core Skills for Delegates (February)
About the course
Please note: this course is for Delegates only. If you are interested in becoming a Delegate in your workplace, contact our Union below for more information.
This is an interactive, introductory and practical training course delivered face-to-face over one full day (9am through 4pm).
In the course, we'll cover the foundations of being an effective Delegate, including:
what it means to be a Delegate;
how to connect and communicate with workmates;
how to support members (and how our Union can support you in this process); and
how to educate and empower your workmates to take action.
On the day, Delegates will meet two member benefit service providers, Union Health and Hall Payne Lawyers. Organisers will also join us towards the end of the day for a workshop.
Registration questions
When you register, you will be asked a series of questions. The questions are a required part of the registration form. Please do not skip the questions or your registration will be incomplete.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Where is the course located?
Each course is facilitated in South Brisbane with a number of spots saved specifically for our Delegates residing in the regions. If you're regional, we will work with you to plan and cover the cost of your travel.
If you live more than an hour's drive from South Brisbane, pick a course date that works for you and we'll be in touch with you to discuss how we can support you in getting to the training.
- Will I be reimbursed for travel costs?
Training is free, and all parking and travel costs will be reimbursed to you. Be sure to keep your receipts!
Once you register, our Union will be in touch to discuss whether flights and/or accommodation are needed to help you attend the training. We will pay flight and accommodation costs up front.
- Can I access paid leave to attend the training?
Most if not all of our Delegates have access to paid union training leave as part of their Award or Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA).
To request paid leave, you would follow your normal leave request process. If there is no option for paid training leave in your workplace's leave system, you can simply send an email to your relevant manager or the person who approves your leave requests.
- Is lunch provided?
All meals - morning tea, afternoon tea, and lunch - are catered for on the day, so please be sure to include your dietary requirements on the registration form.
Tea and coffee are also provided, with a choice of milks (including plant-based milk).
You are welcome to bring any snacks, food, or drinks as well.
- Is this course mandatory?
Yes, this is a required course for all Delegates.
To ensure you comply with the Fair Work Act and our Union's Code of Conduct, we require all Delegates to attend and complete our Core Skills for Delegates course within three (3) months of being endorsed as a Delegate.
If you're unable to complete Core Skills within that time, please contact our Union's Training team so we can support you.
- I have already done this training. Can I do it again?
Yes! While our session is designed with new Delegates in mind, we often have experienced, long-term Delegates come back for a refresher.
- How will I be supported after training?
Your Delegate development doesn't stop once the training ends. In fact, it's only the beginning.
We know everyone learns differently and training is not a "one size fits all" scenario. So, our Union will work with you to identify what your focus areas are and which skills you'd like to strengthen and build confidence with.
With direct input from you, your Organiser, and our Union's training and development team, we will work together to shape an ongoing development plan that fits YOU: your goals, your needs, your workplace.
Testimonials
I feel that I have a solid foundation on what my role is. Loved it!
I really got a great foundational knowledge of the role. How to approach non-members, have conversations with members, and talk about union benefits. I have more confidence now as a very new Delegate.
The most important thing I learned was that I'm not alone in what I'm doing. I liked the group work, open discussions, and different ideas. I found it very helpful.
I have a better understanding of how to support and encourage union membership, and how to promote myself as a Delegate.
