CONNECT TO YOUR KAI - SHARE
WORKSHOP 4: FROM SOIL TO SOUL - THE RECIPROCITY OF COMPOST
with Maddy Cull

Maddy Cull is a thinker, grower and connector who has worked across projects dedicated to improving kai systems and creating pathways for sustainable change in Tāmaki Makaurau. To Maddy, composting is a living practice of reciprocity - a way to enhance mauri, reconnect with the cycles of life, and a way for us to centre ourselves within them. She believes the process of decay holds an opportunity for renewal, connection and collective care.

In Workshop 4 (Share) in the Connect to Your Kai series, Maddy will lay the foundations of composting, exploring different composting styles for different settings, materials and ingredients. She’ll share practical ways to use finished compost in your garden, as well as how to make compost teas.

From these foundations, we’ll open the conversation to share your own experiences with composting - what has worked, what hasn’t, why we’re here, and what we want to create. Through sharing, we can organically exchange knowledge, stories and practices.

Maddy will then guide the group in building a static compost pile together - a monument to reciprocity!

Maddy encourages you to bring organic material from your garden to contribute to the shared pile; call it an offering.

And, in return, everyone will leave with a bag of Kelmarna’s microbially rich compost, and hopefully a big grin, from soil to soul.

You’ll leave with…

  • A theoretical kete full of new knowledge and practical understanding of composting.

  • A real kete full of Kelmarna’s microbially rich, living compost.

  • A deeper understanding of compost as a practice of reciprocity, connection and care.

  • An opportunity to share your own experiences and learn from others.

This workshop is for all levels of composters. Whether you’re just starting out or have been composting for years, the hope is that we can share, glean from one another, get our hands dirty and have an enjoyable day together.

Prepare to get dirty, and even better … embrace it! Rejoice in it!

Connect to Your Kai with Kelmarna is a hands-on journey of growing, sourcing, preparing and sharing climate friendly kai. Each week in November we’ll share practical ways you can engage in your local food system, as well a workshop that you can join in on (come to one or come to many).

We look forward to seeing you on the farm soon!
