This is Part I of a two-part webinar series on cultural awareness & cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people. It is highly recommended to attend Part I: Cultural Awareness prior to Part II: Cultural Safety.

CONTENT

Following the Skills Ministers’ announcement on October 1, 2024, on the revised Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) the Training Accreditation Council (TAC) has developed new webinars to address topics under key quality areas. TAC has engaged Aboriginal owned and operated provider, Kambarang Services, to develop and deliver a series of workshops addressing cultural awareness and cultural safety.

In Part I of this webinar series Danny Ford, OAM, a Noongar man and a senior traditional custodian of Whadjuk Country will cover CULTURAL AWARENESS for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people. This includes:

• What is cultural awareness and why is it important for the VET sector?
• The power of stereotypes, racism, anti-racism, white privilege and implicit bias
• Traditional culture – kinship, diversity, creation, protocols and a connection to land
• Impacts of contact – history pre/post colonisation, the stolen generation
• Personal story telling and sharing – respectfully recognising and embedding the strengths of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous world view
• An introduction to the journey of wellbeing and recovery
• Recap and preparation for Part 2: Cultural Safety (Questions)
