Event description

The one-day professional development workshop we offer is aimed to equip mainstream crisis services to engage/help ethnic communities better. It is now one full day long and we limit the number of attendees per workshop to 15-20. This training responds to shift 3 in Te Aorerekura’s ‘National Strategy to Eliminate Family and Sexual Violence’ -- Help ensure specialists, general, and informal workforces are equipped to safely respond, heal and prevent, and enable wellbeing. It is in the process of getting accredited.

  • Free- funded by MSD
  • All workshops are the same (to reach more people), so you will only need to attend one
  • There will be periodic breaks, light refreshments, tea & coffee throughout--please bring your own lunch
  • We usually send out a pre-training survey link prior (note: it is important that you complete this at least 5 working days before the training), so we can adapt it slightly more to the needs of the participants and for reporting purposes.
  • Post evaluation survey and certificates will be sent post-training

This training provides you with food for reflection, activities, case studies, as well as very practical tools to take home, both for individual therapists and teams. It is a 'must' for anyone working with ethnically diverse clients.

We think that this training is important as since the commencement of this training, in the pre-evaluation survey (Shama, 2022) more than 99% of participants reported at least 1-5 experiences with ethnic clients or from different backgrounds/faiths in the last two years. In addition, almost 70% had worked with more than five people of different ethnicities and 56% more than five cases of people from different faiths. Many of them reported that they felt uncomfortable about asking critical questions relating to faith, culture, racism and visas.

As of June 2024, we have delivered over 50 workshops across all of Aotearoa and trained over 600 people!
