Event description

Get ready for the Culture Vulture Film Festival!

We have four award winning Australian independent films that all feature powerful scripts with something to say and outstanding performances by well-known and up-coming Australian talent.

'What About Sal' is written, directed, produced and stars Aussie legend John Jarratt, with co-stars Gerard O'Dwyer and Kaarin Fairfax. Sal has Down Syndrome and his Mum has cancer and doesn't have long to live. The race is on for Sal to find his Dad, because he really doesn't want to live in a group home. This is a heartwarming film that has won international awards including Best Actor for John Jarratt and nominations for Best Actor Awards for Gerard O'Dwyer and Kaarin Fairfax at The Septimius Awards in Amsterdam.

'Just A Farmer' is written, produced and stars Leila Sweeney, and is the directorial debut of Fremantle born and bred Simon Lyndon.  Sweeney was featured on Australian Story recently because her story is remarkable. A real-life farmer with no training in the arts, she created Just A Farmer on tenacity, drive and a burning desire to tell an important story. It's about the mental health of farmers, grief and community and won Best Actress at the Septimius Awards, Best International Feature at The Buffalo Film Festival and Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

'Vincent' is written, directed, produced and stars Alan King. It's a wild ride through the psyche of tortured artist Vincent, who lives as a recluse until his novel becomes a best seller and thrusts him into the spotlight. He's also being pursued by a mysterious beast. Inspired by David Lynch and Dogma Films, King has crafted a compelling script and character about the sensitivity of the artist and the pitfalls of fame. A thoroughly unique film that won King a Best Actor nomination at The Septimius Film Awards and Best Performance in a Feature Film at the Santiago Horror Film Festival.

'He Aint Heavy' is the debut feature of Perth writer/director David Vincent Smith and stars Greta Scacchi, her daughter Leila George and Sam Corbett. It's about the desperate measures a sister goes through to get her brother clean and features power-house performances by Corlett, George and Scacchi. It recently won four awards at the WA Screen Awards, including Best Actor for Sam Corlett.
