Curator's Talk - Dancing Through the Decades

Dancing Through the Decades is a vibrant exploration of dance as a powerful form of cultural expression across the City of Hume, spanning from early settlement to the present day. The exhibition reveals how dance has shaped identity, storytelling, and community connection, highlighting its enduring place in social life.

Beginning with early local settlements in Broadmeadows, Sunbury and surrounding districts, the exhibition explores how community dances, held in halls, schools and local venues, brought people together through traditions such as the waltz, foxtrot and swing. Archival photographs, programs and objects bring these shared moments of celebration and connection to life.

The exhibition then moves into the later twentieth century, tracing the rise of youth culture and the influence of popular dance styles including rock ’n’ roll, disco and contemporary social trends. Through personal stories and visual material, it reflects broader social changes, including shifts in music, fashion and media, alongside the growth and diversity of Hume’s communities.

Drawing on objects, images and research, Meryl invites audiences to consider their own experiences of dance and its role in shaping identity, belonging and community life.
