CREATE: Curious Specimens
Description
Make something.
CREATE is Creative Curiosity’s monthly project series, built around the pleasure of making something with your hands.
Each gathering begins with a specific project. Along the way, you’ll learn techniques, experiment with materials, and have plenty of room to make it your own.
The project gives us somewhere to begin. What happens while we’re making it is the practice.
This Month
Paint your own collection of curious insects inspired by the strange and beautiful creatures of the natural world.
In this workshop, we’ll look closely at moths, beetles, butterflies, cicadas, dragonflies, and other insects, noticing their shapes, symmetry, patterns, and color. Then you’ll use watercolor and ink to create a collection of your own.
Your specimens can be inspired by real insects or wander into something entirely invented. We’ll explore techniques for layering color, adding pattern and texture, and simplifying complex forms before cutting out our finished insects and arranging them into specimen-style collections.
Add handwritten labels, invent names and classifications, or keep your collection rooted in the natural world. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your own curious collection and a little more appreciation for the tiny, strange things living around us.
