Join us at the Kansas City Art Institute for a compelling lecture by interdisciplinary artist Alteronce Gumby, whose practice spans painting, installation, and film. Gumby’s work has been exhibited at top galleries including Nicola Vassell, Hauser & Wirth, and Gagosian, and has appeared in leading publications such as ARTnews, Frieze, Cultured, Vogue, and Artnet.

His pieces are held in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the National Gallery of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum. Gumby has participated in prestigious residencies like the Rauschenberg Residency and la Fondation des États-Unis in Paris.

Most recently, his award-winning documentary COLOR investigates the cultural and material spectrum of color across the globe. He is currently at work on its follow-up, COLOR in Nature, and preparing for his upcoming 2025 exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery.

About the artist:

Alteronce Gumby is a New York City-based artist whose practice spans painting, ceramics, installation, and film. Inspired by a transformative visit to a Picasso museum in Barcelona, he pursued formal art education at Dutchess Community College, Hunter College (BFA), and the Yale School of Art (MFA in Painting and Printmaking). His work draws from the cosmos and the materiality of earthly and cosmic space, engaging viewers with luminous, iridescent colors that challenge perceptions of form, color, and identity.
