Event description

Curtains of Co-Creation explores how embroidery can unfold as dialogue, memory, and collective labour. Moving beyond ornament, the project reimagines stitch as a sensorial and reflective practice — a way of slowing down, resisting speed, and engaging with the traces that fabric, body, and memory carry. By layering stitches, textures, and symbols, participants contribute to a shared textile work that becomes a living record of presence and care.

What is involved?

This 2-hour workshop opens a space where embroidery becomes more than technique — it becomes conversation, reflection, and collective storytelling. Participants will be guided through mark-making and embroidery practices that invite personal expression and shared exploration. Prompts around identity, labour, and memory will spark dialogue, as stitches, textures, and symbols are contributed to a growing textile piece.

A live collaborative stitching session will bring these contributions together into one shared work — a performative act that unfolds as a passage of time and labour, where every mark carries a story. The process itself is as important as the outcome: works created will be photographed and archived, and the making journey recorded through video, audio, and written reflections.

This workshop is an extension of Curtains of Co-Creation, first presented at Melbourne Design Week 2025, continuing to build on the work through collective workshops and shared making.

Open to all, regardless of skill or experience, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to slow down, connect, and co-create in an atmosphere of openness and curiosity.

What to bring or prepare?

You don’t need to bring anything — all materials and equipment will be provided. You are welcome, however, to bring a small piece of fabric, thread, or textile object of your own to stitch into the work if you wish.

Where is it?

This workshop is held as part of the exhibition Uncertain Endings at Dark Horse Experiment, 400 Spencer St, West Melbourne. You’ll also be able to browse the exhibition during the workshop, taking inspiration from the garments and textile works on display.
