CyberSafe VU: Spot the Scam, Stop the Fraud

CyberSafe VU is a cyber-safety program made up of two workshops, designed to help VU students and staff to understand and protect themselves from online scams and fraud. AI is becoming a bigger part of everyday life, and so are the scams that come with it.

• Workshop 1: Recognising AI-Generated Scams, Deepfakes & Voice Cloning

  (16th October, 1:00 - 3:00 PM)

• Workshop 2: Securing Accounts, Passwords & Personal Data

  (30th October, 1:00- 3:00 PM)

📍 Location: Victoria University City Tower, Level 5, Room CTY-T0510
🎟️ Ticket: A $20 deposit is required, but will be refunded upon attendance!

You don't need to study IT or cybersecurity to attend, just an interest in staying safe online (and helping the people around you do the same).

🤖 Workshop 1: Recognising AI-Generated Scams, Deepfakes & Voice Cloning

AI is changing how scams are being created. And, with how convincing they've become. This session helps to explore on how AI can be used to create deepfakes, clone voices, and impersonate people we know, and how to prevent falling for these scams.

What you'll learn:

• How AI can be used to create convincing scams and fake content

• What deepfakes are and how they're used to deceive people

• How voice cloning can be used to impersonate someone you know

• Common warning signs to look out for

• Simple ways to stay cautious and protect yourself online

🔐 Workshop 2: Securing Accounts, Passwords & Personal Data

This workshop focuses on how to secure your accounts, passwords and personal data, and spotting fraud before it catches you out.

What you'll learn:

• How to secure personal accounts, passwords and personal data

• Practical cyber-awareness skills for everyday situations

• How to identify fraud and suspicious activity relevant to student life

• Real vs fake messages/scams, interactive activity

• How to help family or friends recognise and respond to scams

Who Can Attend?

Open to all VU students and Staff, regardless of course, faculty or technical experience. You can attend one or both workshops.
