Cybervent: A collaborative perspective on navigating the cyber security landscape

Cyber threats pose significant threats to Australia’s security and prosperity. In Australia, a new cybercrime is reported every six minutes. Cybercrime costs the Australian economy approximately $30 billion per year, and the average cost of a cybercrime to the affected small businesses is now $46,000.

Collaboration and innovation in Australia’s cyber security is essential to protecting our infrastructure, services, organisations and citizens. The University of Canberra undertakes critical and impactful research in cyber security with government and industry partners to help make Australia more resilient to cyber threats, such as Project DFNDR in collaboration with Canberra-based cyber security companies, Ionize and Cybermerc.

Cybervent: A collaborative perspective on navigating the cyber security landscape will showcase UC’s cyber research and collaborations, host important discussions for the sector and offer opportunities for cyber and allied professionals to network and explore future collaborative opportunities. Join us for a dynamic discussion on the ever-evolving landscape of cyber security, learn about some of the latest challenges and trends emerging in academia and industry, and engage with likeminded professionals.

• 5:15pm to 5:30pm – welcome and opening remarks

Speakers and panel members:

• Dr Justin Fidock, Program Leader of National Security at Defence Science and Technology Group. Justin is a Senior Defence Scientist with highly developed leadership and management skills. He has more than 20 years’ experience applying his psychology and information systems knowledge and skills to analysing current and future social-technical systems.
• Andrew Muller, CEO and Managing Director, Ionize. Andrew has over 25 years’ experience as a leading cyber practitioner, including being a contributing member of the Standards Australia and OWASP security testing standards bodies. Since establishing Ionize in 2008, Andrew has worked closely with government and non-government clients including in high security and high sensitivity environments. Andrew began his career with the Royal Australia Air Force before moving to the Defence Signals Directorate.
• Karen Schilling, ACT Defence and Advanced Technology Industry Advocate and Director, the Canberra Cyber Hub. Karen is a highly capable Executive Manager and Chief Operating Officer with over 20 years’ experience in Defence industry, serving as a Logistics Officer in the Royal Australia Air Force and established, grew and sold a successful local business called Sigma Bravo.
• Professor Frank den Hartog, Cisco Research Chair in Critical Infrastructure at the University of Canberra. Frank is also an Adjunct Fellow at UNSW, researching and teaching security, reliability, and interoperability in wireless Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) and runs the private consultancy firm, DoVes Research.
• Moderator: Dr. Abu Barkat Ullah is an Associate Professor specialising in Cyber Security at the University of Canberra. Barkat has a wealth of experience in cyber security, safety and artificial intelligence.
