The Australian government has announced its largest-ever investment of over $1.35 billion dollars over the next 10 years to enhance cyber security defences.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “malicious cyber activity against Australia is increasing in frequency, scale and sophistication”. So what is actually happening and why? What are the potential repercussions and implications? What should I do to mitigate the risks to my business?

Speakers Bios

Michelle Price 
She was the inaugural Chief Operating Officer of AustCyber, joining the company in January 2017 and appointed as CEO in April 2018. Prior to joining AustCyber, Michelle was the first Senior Adviser for Cyber Security at the National Security College within The Australian National University, where she established an integrated approach to the College’s cyber security program across executive and postgraduate education and policy engagement.

Before joining the ANU, Michelle was with the Australian Government Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), where she was instrumental to the delivery of the Australian Government’s 2015 Cyber Security Review and Cyber Security Strategy. In a previous role at PM&C, Michelle delivered the National Security Strategic Risk Framework (the first of its kind in the world) and Coordinated National Security Budget.

Hai Tran

Hai Tran is the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre's inaugural Chief Executive Officer. Recently arriving in South Australia, Hai was previously the first-ever chief information security officer for the Western Australian Police. Hai has 15 years experience in IT, risk management and governance from the private and public sectors.

Before joining WA Police he spent three years as the head of the Australian arm of Coptercam and four years as the CISO at Curtin University of Technology. He also previously worked at the federal Department of Finance, Macquarie Telecom, and security services company CyberTrust.

Dr Vaughan Shanks

A Melbourne-based startup that has built a case management platform for security operations. Before founding Cydarm, Vaughan worked at Palantir, a Silicon Valley-based data analytics vendor, as a forward-deployed engineer and deployment lead. Prior to that, Vaughan worked for almost 10 years at the Department of Defence, in Canberra and Maryland, USA, leading DevOps teams and driving analytic modernisation efforts using big data. 

Vaughan has a PhD in Computer Science, specialising in high scale machine learning, and Bachelor degrees in Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering.
