The Man Who Invented Vegemite: Cyril's Lab Pass: Saturday 17 August 2024

Cyril's Lab is a new science space opening this weekend at the Cyril Callister Museum, which celebrates Australian scientist Dr Cyril Callister and his invention Vegemite, at Beaufort, Victoria.

We are giving budding young scientists a pass to Cyril's Lab to make Vegemite Caviar. The event is for kids aged 10 years old and over on Saturday, August 17 at 11.30am. You need to book them in but be quick. Places are limited.

Cyril’s Lab recreates the laboratory where Dr Callister and his team invented the iconic spread in 1923. Here, small student groups from Year 5 and up will perform interactive science experiments using Vegemite.

The Cyril Callister Foundation wants to spread the story of Dr Callister and his invention and inspire young people to study science and history. The foundation runs the museum and a scholarship supporting youth from regional Australia through university.

The foundation's inaugural scholarship winner Samuel Varjabedian, a science student from Federation University, Ballarat, adapted Vegemite inspired experiments for use in Cyril’s Lab and a program that Dr Callister's grandson Jamie Callister delivers in schools.

The Cyril Callister Museum is located in the heritage town of Beaufort, near Chute, where Dr Callister grew up. See memorabilia, collectables and outdoor and indoor art inspired by Vegemite and painted by local artists and students. Try painting with Vegemite or leave that to the kids while you taste Vegemite inspired sweets and baked treats. 

The Cyril Callister Museum opens Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am-2pm. Entry to the museum is free but guests must register to enter Cyril's Lab. On event day, participants must wear closed in shoes and tie long hair back. We provide safety goggles, lab coats and gloves.
