Dancer: in readiness potential
Event description
The atmosphere swirls between people, buildings and matter. We are composed of this curious element, permeated by it and take no real distance from it. To look over something that’s invisible, the unseen quality of air, the gusting wind, or to acknowledge breath, encompasses the wild sentences of our environment often moody with weather. To speak to the unseen spirits that gather near, or linger in an ever-shifting flux that we generally are unable to lay eyes on. This affinity between air and awareness allows the curious possibility that stirs within each of us, moves around us, twisting grasses and lofting feathers. Listening, shaping a line on the wind, falling silent, we orient ourselves to meet the clouds massing in the distance carrying textures and rhythms. Stepping aside from our screens we bring our spinning minds back to alignment from the whisper and singsong to renew our participation in the breathing commons.

Kaye Mahoney is a Thai born Australian American multimedia artist. Her wide-ranging expressive tools include video, installations, painting, text, assemblage and music. Many of her works are conceived as platforms for experimentation and interaction. In her early years, after completing an MFA program at the New York Academy of Art, Mahoney trained in Italy and practiced as a muralist specializing in fresco. Mid-career, she was represented by Dillon Gallery in Chelsea, New York and exhibited regularly in France and Italy. Since moving to Australia, Mahoney’s shows have included a major solo exhibition at the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, solo exhibitions in Sydney at Art Atrium and a show at Lesley Heller Gallery, New York. Mahoney maintains studios in Sydney and France and is represented in Sydney by Art Atrium.
Teena McCarthy is a visual artist and poet who works predominantly in painting, photography and performance art. She graduated in 2014 from UNSW Art & Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction. McCarthy is an Italian/Barkindji woman who is a descendant of The Stolen Generations. Her work documents her family’s displacement and Aboriginal Australian’s loss of Culture and their ‘hidden’ history. While acknowledging the intergenerational pain of post colonialism, McCarthy uses wit, humour and pathos to explore her own identity. Synchronicity also comes into play in McCarthy’s experimental painting, often determining its outcome and informing its own materiality.
Tony Osborne is a Sydney-based voice, dance and sound artist. He has created numerous full length theatre solos since 1991 many of which were improvised. He has performed in all capital cities in Australia, in the UK, USA, Germany, China & Switzerland. I am a long-standing member of the Splinter Orchestra and was a bass singer in Sydney University Graduate Choir for ten years until 2020. He has led improvisation workshops in most states of Australia and this work is ongoing in Sydney.
