Dances of Universal Peace in Leederville (Q4 2026)
Description
A welcoming Friday evening circle of simple movement, shared song, and quiet connection.
No experience needed. Gentle, inclusive, and grounded — a moving meditation to end the week
The Dances of Universal Peace (DUP) are easy, guided circle dances where we learn short chants and gentle movements together. No dance experience, musical ability, or spiritual background is needed. Everything is taught as we go.
The dances include sacred phrases and mantras from different cultures and traditions, offered in an open, inclusive way. You don’t need to understand the words or sing “properly” — humming, singing “la la”, listening, and adapting movements to suit your body are all welcome, while staying connected to the shared rhythm of the circle.
This isn’t a performance, class, or high-energy dance night. It’s closer to a moving meditation in community — a chance to:
let go of the work week
get out of your head and into your body
experience shared rhythm and shared sound
finish Friday feeling grounded and refreshed
People come on their own or with friends. All genders welcome.
Curiosity is enough.
Room open from 5:50pm for cuppa and chat before we start. Session starts at 6:15pm promptly. Late-comers are always welcome to come in and join the circle for the next dance.
🌟 Connection & Community
No performance, no audience — just a group moving and singing together in a supportive circle. It’s like a communal practice where everyone participates equally.
🧘♀️ Mind-Body Reset
Think of it as a movement meditation or “heart-centered flow” — accessible, gentle, and deeply grounding without being physically intense.
🎶 Music + Movement
Simple rhythmic chanting makes it feel more like a shared experience than a class.
🌀 Open to All Backgrounds
Whether you’re spiritual, curious, creatively inclined, or just want something uplifting to do, the Dances invite you as you are — diversity is part of the practice itself.
*** VENUE is the Birak Room at Vincent Community Centre, 99 Loftus St, Leederville ***

FAQs
- 👕 What should I wear?
Come as you are, no special dress requirements. We mostly take our shoes off and dance in bare feet or socks, but if that's not feasible for you, you are welcome to wear supportive footwear.
- 🌱 Do I need any dance experience?
No. The dances are simple and taught as we go. You’re invited to follow at your own pace, and it’s perfectly fine to sit out, observe, or rest at any time.
- 👣 What actually happens at a session?
We often begin by quietly moving around the space in a meditative walk, then gather in a circle and learn a series of simple, gentle dances. These involve easy movements, shared chanting, and periods of stillness. The atmosphere is calm and participatory rather than performative.
- 🕊 Is it okay if I’m new / shy / unsure?
Yes — very much so. Many people come feeling unsure the first time. You’re not expected to know anything in advance, and there’s no pressure to “do it right.”
- 🎶 What if I can’t sing?
You’re warmly encouraged to have a go — perfection isn’t the point. The chanting is simple and carried by the group, and many people discover that their voice feels different in this shared, supportive setting.
- 🪑 What if I have limited mobility or need to rest?
You are welcome to participate in ways that suit your body. Chairs are available, and it’s completely acceptable to sit out, move gently, or simply join in with your voice.
- 💸 Why do I need to register online?
Online registration helps us plan numbers and reduces the need to handle cash on the day. If cost is a barrier, please feel free to get in touch.
- 🌿 Is this a religious activity?
Dances of Universal Peace draw on sacred phrases from many spiritual traditions, but no particular belief is assumed or required. People come from a wide range of backgrounds, including religious, spiritual, and secular. You’re invited to engage in ways that feel comfortable and respectful for you.
- 🎶 Is there live music or instruments?
The dances are accompanied by shared chanting and simple vocal tones, creating a quiet and grounded soundscape.
If you play a musical instrument and are drawn to the possibility of adding to the shared sound in this way, you are first invited to come and experience the dances as a dancer. Please make yourself known to Ishara and we can explore next steps together😊 - 🤍 Is this like ecstatic dance or freeform movement?
No. Dances of Universal Peace are structured and guided. Movements are shared by the whole group and emphasise connection, simplicity, and attentiveness rather than self-expression or improvisation.
- 👥 Is this suitable for people of different faiths (or none)?
Yes. The practice honours many spiritual lineages while remaining open and inclusive. Participants are encouraged to interpret the experience in ways that align with their own values and understanding.
- ❓ I have another question - how can I contact the facilitator?
You are welcome to reach via text message to Ishara on 0415 593 408 or by email ishara.degaris@gmail.com.
I am not always able to answer my phone, but if you text me I will get back to you.
