Hosted by the Farming Together Program

The inaugural FREE Learning Together Live Webinar will start with a brief introduction about collaborative business models and structures by Farming Together Strategic Director Lorraine Gordon and Program Manager Amanda Scott. Farming Together helps farmers, fishers and foresters establish business models and co-ops that address economic and environmental challenges. The program has helped over 28,500 farmers to find collaborative solutions.

Main topic:
Dare to Share Your data

Developing a Farmer-Driven data Co-operative

Data sharing arrangements allow farmers to gain access to a wider set of data to help with management decisions.

Hear from Phillip Guthrie and Chris Sounness about data sharing initiatives while at Birchip Cropping Group (BCG).

Speaker stories are followed by a Live Interactive Q&A

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

PHILLIP GUTHRIE

Phillip Guthrie leads BCG’s innovation portfolio, developing and managing projects that help BCG members and Australian broadacre farmers increase their productivity, profitability and sustainability. Current projects include the development of a farmer-owned agricultural data marketplace, implementing on-farm telecommunications networks and helping farmers to make greater use of precision agriculture.

CHRIS SOUNNESS

Chris Sounness, Executive Director at Wimmera Development Association, is the former CEO of Birchip Cropping Group. During his time with BCG, Chris facilitated 40 farmers to connect their weather station data so that it was uploaded to a single, shared source.

Chris challenged farmers to see the value in collecting and curating their data and suggested that co-op members should be custodians of the data and its use may be best governed by contract law.
