Description

About the Program

HSC students explore the best scientific practice when collecting and analysing data for the HSC science extension course – how to organise your data for effective analysis, a deep dive into the statistical tests required by the Science Extension HSC syllabus, and how to accurately interpret the meaning of your results.

By the time your students leave, they should feel confident analysing the data collected throughout their scientific research project using the same methods as researchers in academia and industry.

This seminar is the second in a three-part series of data analysis advice workshops run by the University of Sydney for HSC Science Extension students. If you missed part one – Understanding Method Design and Data Collection – or wish to revise the content before attending part two, please contact us for a copy of the slides.

Lesson Structure
  • Review of classifications of data and how to choose the correct classification

  • Choosing the appropriate statistical analysis techniques

  • Understanding P-values and significance

  • Understanding hypothesis test (linear regression, chi-squared and non-parametric tests)

  • Introduction to Excel and other data analysis programs

This workshop includes a hands-on Excel activity so it is recommended that students join with individual laptops that have access to the desktop version of Excel.
