    Event description

    About the Program

HSC students explore the best scientific practice when collecting data for the HSC Science Extension course - what to consider when formulating a research question, the "how to" of experimental design, and what statistics are important to consider before commencing data collection.

There will be an opportunity for you and your students to hear from and meet our statistics demonstrators. Our demonstrators are honours and postgraduate students with majors in mathematics who readily use statistics in their own research practice. In addition to an understanding of statistical theory, they will provide research advice and inspiration from their own research areas.

By the time your students leave, they should feel confident stepping out into their own exciting dive into authentic scientific research.

This seminar is the first in a three-part series of data analysis advice workshops run by the University of Sydney for HSC Science Extension students. Parts two and three - Understanding Hypothesis Testing and Statistical Analysis and Personalised Data Analysis Advice - will run concurrently in May and June. The combination of these two workshops is designed to advise students how to effectively analyse the specific data they have collected throughout their research. Registration details for parts two and three of the Data Analysis Advice program will be released closer to the date.

    Lesson Structure

    • Understanding the appropriate use of methodologies for quantitative and qualitative research, including primary and secondary investigations, and meta-analyses.
    • Classifications of data and how to choose the correct classification.
    • Understanding what is required to collect valid and reliable data in different scientific contexts.
    • Considerations that should be made when designing a method and gathering data.
    • Sources of error and how to minimise them.
    • Introduction to statistical analysis techniques and their assumptions.
