Data Engineering Jumpstart
Description
This is a synchronous online class, which means you'll still attend class sessions during class time and receive plenty of hands-on experience and time with the instructor. You will need a camera and microphone on your laptop to participate in class. If you've wanted to learn at NSS, here's your opportunity to get a taste of our online learning environment!
----------------------------
Are you considering a career in data engineering and want to experience the work before committing to a longer program? Have you wondered what happens to data before it reaches a dashboard, report, or AI application? Maybe you work with data today and want a better understanding of how it gets collected, cleaned, stored, and made available for others to use.
If you are looking for a hands-on introduction to data engineering and want to learn what it is like to build a small data pipeline, the Data Engineering Jumpstart was created for you.
Duration: This course is 33 synchronous hours over 3 weeks.
November 14 - December 10, 2026 (Thanksgiving Break 11/24-28)
Saturdays | 9 am - 2 pm CT
Tuesdays and Thursdays | 6 pm - 9 pm CT
*Registering for this event enrolls you in the full 3-week course.
What will the course cover?
The Data Engineering Workflow
Python & CSV Data
APIs & JSON
SQL & Data Storage
Data Quality & Validation
Data Delivery & Streamlit

For those that are considering an NSS bootcamp, materials covered in this course will give you a jumpstart on your pre-work, but it does not replace the pre-work.
How will you learn the material?
Live Online Instruction
New topics will be introduced through a combination of live instruction and live coding. Instructors will demonstrate concepts by working with the same types of data and problems students will encounter in their exercises.
Mentored Exercises
You will apply each new concept by working directly with data and modifying a growing data pipeline. Instructors will be available to help when you get stuck and to help you reason through unfamiliar problems.
Real-World Project
Throughout the course, you will build a small but complete data pipeline. Your pipeline will: Get data → Transform it → Validate it → Store it → Deliver it. You will work with data from files and an API, process it with Python, store it in a SQLite database, query it with SQL, and display the finished data through Streamlit. During the final class, you will receive a new CSV file that your pipeline has never seen before. You will adapt your ingestion and transformation code so the new data can continue through the existing validation, database, and visualization portions of your pipeline.
Materials to Keep You Going
Whether you continue through self-study or decide to pursue a career in data engineering, you will leave with the project you built, an understanding of the basic data engineering lifecycle, and guidance on what to learn next.

Attendance Policy: For the following scenarios, we would be happy to work with you and point you at resources to help fill in what you missed. The instruction staff is happy to catch you up to speed.
Missing class 1 or 2 (unless the first day of class is on a Saturday. See below).
Missing a day due to an emergency.
You’ve been accepted into an upcoming Bootcamp.
For the following scenarios, we would encourage you to look into enrolling in the next available course. Courses are regularly offered and there might be one that better fits your schedule. If there are no future courses listed, make sure to ask us and we’ll let you know roughly when the next class is slotted for.
Missing a Saturday. Because Saturdays include 5 hours of instruction and hands-on exercise, it is best not to miss these.
Missing any class period beyond week 1. Materials covered in weeks following build on each other and can include complex topics.
Missing multiple days.
Refund Policy: Tuition will be refunded, minus an administration fee, if a request is made prior to the start of the second class session. The administration fee covers the ticketing fees and is around $10 per ticket. If you would like to transfer to a different month or Jumpstart, please email us at info@nashvillesoftwareschool.com before requesting a refund.
