Day of the Dead in Newy
Description
Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Celebrate life, remember the people you love and experience one of Mexico's most beautiful traditions, right here in Newcastle.
The Latin American Dance Society (University of Newcastle), Moon Over Water and Newcastle's Mexican community invite you to a Día de Muertos celebration at The Hamilton Hive, decorated as Mexico for one night. Everyone is welcome: families, friends, dancers and first-timers.
Proudly sponsored by Dance On Newy.
Program
6:00 to 7:00 PM: Mexican games: lotería (Mexican bingo), pin the tail on the donkey, dominoes and more
7:00 to 8:00 PM: Live music by Moon Over Water
8:00 to 11:00 PM: Dance and party
You're welcome to dress up as a Catrina or Catrín
Community ofrenda
An ofrenda is an altar where families honour loved ones who have passed. We'll build one together on the night. You're welcome to bring a printed photo of someone you'd like to remember (standard 6 x 4 inch / 10 x 15 cm print). Please write their name on the back and take your photo home at the end of the night.
Food and drinks
Healthy snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and Latin sweets will be available to buy on the night. This is a BYO alcohol event for guests 18 and over.
