Death and Dying in the ED and Acute Care Setting Mount Gambier 2 September 2025
Event description
An educational session for health professionals based around the topic of Death and Dying in the Emergency Department and Acute Care setting presented by Dr Fiona Leaker (Staff Specialist Emergency Medicine) and featuring guest presenter A/Prof Matthew Hooper.
The evening will include discussions focussed around:
Diagnosing dying – be able to recognise patients who have a life-limiting illness and recognise the differing patterns of functional decline at the end of life.
Discuss dying – have an approach to discussing end of life issues and goals of care with patients and/or their caregivers
Dealing with dying – anticipate and prescribe appropriately for symptoms at end of life – both drug and non-drug therapies.
This program is suitable for ALL staff who work in the Emergency and Acute Care Setting. Particularly Medical Staff, RMO's/JMO's, Associateship in Emergency Medicine Candidates- Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, Nurses, GPs, Career and Volunteer Paramedics, and Medical and Nursing Students
Dinner is included but places are limited.
About A/Prof Matthew Hooper:
Matt is an accomplished intensive care specialist with a diverse background in emergency medicine, prehospital & retrieval medicine, and palliative care.
Notable for his leadership in developing critical care service models, he founded South Australia’s MedSTAR Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. He has also co-authored a highly regarded case-based text book and held key teaching and examining roles nationally and internationally in prehospital and retrieval medicine.
With a strong focus on high-performance teams working within high acuity, high consequence environments, Matt's expertise has also extended to human factors in healthcare, cardiothoracic intensive care, ECMO, and clinical ultrasound. More recently however, he has pivoted towards palliative and end of life care, pursuing a Master's degree at Cardiff University and consulting at Mary Potter Hospice in Adelaide. He is passionate about exploring new and innovative ways to prevent potentially avoidable suffering and enhance end of life outcomes for patients in acute care clinical environments.
