Debiasing AI for Child-Focused Programs
Event description
Hosted by CUBIC in partnership with Save the Children New Zealand
Large Language Models (like ChatGPT and Claude) are transforming how we design and deliver child-focused programs in health, education, and humanitarian response, but most are trained on data from WEIRD societies: Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic.
That means the AI we use globally often reflects only a narrow slice of human experience, and can reinforce cultural bias in the tools and programs that shape children’s lives.
This live, interactive training helps participants understand, identify, and address these biases using behavioral science, real-world examples, and a cross-cultural lens.
What You’ll Learn
Recognize and explain “WEIRD bias” in AI systems
Understand representation and allocation harms in GenAI
Explore cross-cultural mismatches in model behavior
Apply bias-aware techniques to make AI more inclusive and contextually relevant
