Decolonial Book Club
Event description
It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and helpless right now. I have heard a lot of deep desires to take action while also feeling paralyzed, overwhelmed and helpless.
In honoring this call, I’m excited to share my latest offer - a monthly, in-person Decolonial Book Club. In my own journey towards accountability, humility and bravery, I hope this group will bring to its attendees a deeper understanding of what led us to this time in history and how we can move forward towards collective liberation.
Deep conversations will be had
Emotions will rise up
And we will hold one another with empathy and compassion while also growing together within the discomfort
This space is also an invitation for you to bring your own experience, and to share what these books bring up for you in your journey. Whether you have just become awakened to all the ways in which the patriarchy, capitalism and colonialism impact your daily life, or you’ve been on this journey for a while, the Decolonial Book Club is here to welcome you.
Through our time together we will explore the dynamics of colonialism, how it is harmful, where it all began, and how biases are created, all while leaning on the work of authors who are experts in racial justice, liberation and decolonization.
This space will be specifically addressing whiteness as systemic oppression & the dynamic oppressive mentalities within white people specifically, but also people who have been raised in white presenting environments.
This is not inclusive to white folks, but as I am a white presenting person facilitating this space, the focus of this group will be on decolonizing the idea of whiteness through texts and mutually accountable conversations with one another.
It’s important to note that I am in no way an expert in decolonization - I will forever be a student of this immensely important work. If you feel called to join a community that is also looking to divest from the ways in which colonialism has infiltrated your life, I invite you to join me on this walk together.
Our first gathering will be on March 16, 6-8pm at Vessel Collective where we'll get to know each other, discuss logistics, what to expect, etc. No book needs to be read in preparation for this first meeting.
