Breaking the Chains of Underdevelopment: 'I Am Cuba', Marxism and Decolonisation - Albert Gil Gil

“I am Cuba” is a revolutionary movie in form and content. A Soviet-Cuban production, it portrays pre-revolutionary Cuba and how the nascent Revolution arose from these conditions.

Through an analysis of early Soviet-Cuban relations, this talk will address how the intersection between imperialism and capitalism led to underdevelopment in Cuba and how 20th century Communism offered an alternative path to overcome it. The history of the film, considered an obscure masterpiece for decades until re-released in the 1990s and the 2000s thanks to the pressure of directors like Martin Scorsese, is a useful example to understand how all of this fits together.
