Discussion:

The Hierarchy of Colour - Harishankar Balasingham

Mississippi Masala follows the journey of an Indian immigrant family in Mississippi, America, as they grapple with their cultural identity and prejudices while running a motel business. The film explores themes of race, love, and belonging, particularly through the interracial relationship between the family's daughter, Mina (Sarita Choudhury) and an African American man (Denzel Washington), challenging social norms and exposing deep-seated prejudices within both communities.

Although dealing with a range of complex themes, it is a very unpretentious film and acts as a mirror to our racism(s).

This talk will explore the idea of the hierarchy of colour in non-white communities, specifically in how social dynamics and relationships are shaped and built.
