Event description

This wānanga aims to build knowledge and understanding about the colonisation of tangata

whenua in Aotearoa. Together, we will deconstruct and discuss the steps and outcomes of

colonisation to better understand how we might go about dismantling the existing colonial power

structures which cause harm and address the drivers of inequity which affect our many diverse

communities in Aotearoa.

This wānanga is intended to act as a catalyst for individuals and communities to develop the tools

of critical analysis, critical thinking, and critical self-reflection about the historical and contemporary

forms of colonisation in Aotearoa. Further, it intends to support participants in gaining the

knowledge, understanding and language to effectively analyse and describe the economic and social

conditions created by colonisation that many tangata whenua experience.

Additionally, we will discuss the importance of He Whakaputanga as underpinning the concepts of

tino rangatiratanga and mana motuhake for tangata whenua. We will also discuss Te Tiriti o

Waitangi as an affirmation of exiting rights for tangata whenua and the underpinning of citizenship,

rights, and responsibilities for tangata Tiriti and the Crown. This will be considered in relation to the

impacts of colonisation and how we might go about addressing these impacts and their drivers

collectively.
