Deep Friars
Forming in the crucible of uncertainty that was 2020, Deep Friars are Hobart’s newest (and possibly nerdiest) party band. The four Friars, some of Hobart’s busiest players, met through the nexus of Hobart’s quirkiest guitar store, quickly finding camaraderie in a shared appreciation of writing songs of both ambitious scope and entertaining demeanour. Adding diverse flavours from gospel, jazz, metal and prog to a meaty backbone of indie math-punk means you never quite what’s around the bend: a manic mix of odd time signatures, harmonised guitars, gregarious solos and non-linear forms make the delightfully sugary singalong moments all the more fun. With lyrics full of stories and characters that zigzag seamlessly from the playful and ridiculous to the profound and overwhelming, one thing is for sure: whatever is next, it’s not going to be boring. And the name? “Well…” laughs singer Simon, “it came to my wife in a dream, so we couldn’t fight destiny.”
