Event description

Join Last Hurrah Founders Kimba Griffith and Stass Jones for an evening of frank talk about the realities of working with the dead, the people they leave behind, and the funeral industry at large.

Whether you are a doula or end-of-life attendant seeking to deepen your practice, someone hoping to serve their own community, funeral professionals interested in learning more about the spectrum of doula-based care, birth doulas keen to expand their skillset, or you're simply curious to understand more about death and dying, this online webinar offering is for you.

Kimba and Stass will share real-life examples and cover different scenarios and offering including coroner cases, dying at home, repatriations and more, explaining the unique considerations each requires in order to hold the person and their family in a safe, secure and supported manner.

This session will offer information on:

  • How to manage different deathcare and funeral scenarios
  • A rundown on documentation timeframes
  • The awesome uses of cooling beds (and their limitations)
  • Working with funeral directors who may not have worked with doulas before
  • How to balance your own belief structures and visions with the desires and needs of grieving people
  • The spectrum of offerings in the doula and end of life companioning space
  • A Q&A session

Since opening the Last Hurrah in 2020, Stass and Kimba have worked with almost 700 families and friends to arrange send offs ranging from small intimate home funerals to huge events on country. Stass has a degree in Psychology and came to the work with extensive experience in funeral administration; since founding The Last Hurrah she has evolved into an extraordinary manager of events, people, and tricky situations, all with her deep compassion and trademark humour.

Kimba began her calling in this work as a birth attendant, training under the legendary Rhea Dempsey. She then completed death midwifery study with Leslene Della Madre and also completed her civil celebrancy training. The Last Hurrah has been an incredible vehicle for Kimba to create an offering that combines her skill for holding the dying and their people, her ability to bring to life unique visions of authentic farewell in a smooth and seamless way, and her unparalleled skill in creating deeply personal ceremony.

Join us for what promises to be an illuminating night of deep-diving into deathwork.

NB: The content of this workshop may be confronting and may include images of (non-identifiable) deceased people. We will also be challenging some of the information you may have heard in other doula-training workshops, so be prepared to have your knowledge base shifted and shaken to a degree. You may wish to consider if this workshop is appropriate to you.
