DEIB in an Age of Backlash

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) programs are facing a “backlash” both nationally and in Washington State. This includes recently developed anti-DEIB rhetoric in combination with legislative and legal efforts to roll back inclusion and equity efforts within private and public organizations. Some companies—including large corporations like Lowe’s and Ford Motor Company—have begun limiting their commitment to promote more equitable workplaces in response to this pressure.

This workshop addresses the issue in two 1.5 hour sessions.

Session 1: Unpacks and decodes anti-DEIB rhetoric and overviews the anti-DEIB legal and legislative tactics being implemented across the country, with the goal of providing participants a clearer understanding of the political climate now facing DEIB spaces.

Session 2: Creates a space to consider what strategies we can employ in the DEIB field to counter misleading rhetoric, purposeful misinformation, gaslighting, and outright hostility. 

Together, these sessions help participants to develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate the changing social and political conditions impacting DEIB work.

• Time: 12:00-1:30pm PT / 3:00-4:30pm ET each day
