Desert Ecology Night Walk for Families

This nighttime exploration reveals the desert as it comes alive after sunset. Participants will walk through quiet desert terrain while learning how plants, animals, and entire ecosystems adapt to nighttime conditions. Citizen scientist and artist Paisley Ramstead will guide the group in observing nocturnal behavior, listening for desert sounds, and interpreting signs of wildlife activity.

This is a family-friendly introduction to nighttime desert ecology that emphasizes awareness, safety, and respect for the environment. The pace is slow and reflective, allowing time to experience the sensory shift that occurs after sunset.

• This class takes place at Desert View Conservation Area.

• Anyone may attend! No expertise or experience is required. Youth under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

• Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is not needed for this program.

• Black lights are provided for enhanced nighttime exploration.

• Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

This class is leisurely. It requires less than 2 miles of walking, limited shade, uneven terrain, and little elevation gain. Hiking and walking are not required and can be modified to accommodate participants. 

Required Items:

• Water (1 - 2 liters per person)

• Appropriate attire: Layers are recommended for low nighttime temperatures

• Food and snacks

• Closed-toe athletic shoes

• Headlamp or flashlight (red light preferred)

Meet Your Instructor: Paisley Ramstead is a longtime desert resident who combines a deep passion for creativity with a strong love for the unique wildlife of the region — particularly snakes. Fascinated by these often-misunderstood creatures, she spends much of her time exploring the desert landscape, observing and learning about its diverse reptile population. When she’s not out in the field snake-spotting, Paisley channels her artistic energy into creating intricate collages inspired by the natural world around her. At home, Paisley enjoys the company of her dogs, finding comfort and companionship in their presence after a day of outdoor adventures. She is also an avid thrifter, frequently searching for vintage field guides and other treasures that reflect her love for both history and nature. Paisley’s blend of artistic creativity, wildlife enthusiasm, and desert living brings a distinct perspective to her work and life, making her a passionate advocate for the desert environment she calls home.
