Design assessment in the age of AI
Event description
The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how students learn, and how we teach and assess in higher education.
In this workshop, you will explore the impact of generative AI on assessment validity, integrity, and authenticity. Using a structured evaluation tool, you will critically examine your current assessments for their susceptibility to AI tools and consider opportunities to strengthen or redesign them.
The session will guide you through practical strategies to align assessment tasks with both intended learning outcomes and institutional AI guidelines. We will also discuss how to embed ethical AI use and academic integrity into assessment design in a transparent and pedagogically sound way.
This workshop is based on the session presented at the 2025 Festival of Learning and Teaching, Designing Assessment with AI in Mind.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Evaluate the validity and security of assessment tasks in the context of generative AI, ensuring they accurately measure intended learning outcomes.
Identify strategies to improve assessment design to deter inappropriate use of AI, while encouraging ethical, purposeful engagement aligned with university policies.
Develop authentic assessment strategies that incorporate or account for AI, while maintaining constructive alignment with course objectives.
