DiD Community Conversation - Computational Design
Event description
Large language models and computational design are evolving how we approach the practice of design.
Please join us for a DiD Community Conversation with Thomas Chapman (LandArchTools/McGregor Coxall) and Theodore Galanos (Architext/Aurecon) as they share experiences and insights about their work leading ground breaking computational design projects and innovative product development. Both will share some of the recent work and tools they have been developing.
This session will be online so all welcome! 830am Tues 20 June (AEST) / 630pm Mon 19 June (EST)
Thomas Chapman is the Computational Design Lead at McGregor Coxall's BioUrbanism Lab and Founder of LandarchTools - the globally renowned open source Rhino plugin for landscape architects.
As the Computational Design Lead at McGregor Coxall’s city intelligence discipline, the Biourbanism Lab ,and founder of LandArchTools, an opensource plugin for Rhino used globally within Landscape Architecture, Thomas's work delves into the cybernetic loop of human intellect and machine prowess. He has a formal education in Landscape Architecture (BDes, MLA) and over a decade of Landscape Architectural practise. He is also a self-taught programmer, making him an uncommon amalgamation of hands-on industry experience and progressive technical proficiency.
Thomas crafts digital solutions that empower designers to confront escalating challenges tied to climate resilience with an approach through a prism of data accessibility, agency, and light-hearted engagement. This unique perspective enables a more enjoyable and interactive experience, enriching the design process and making it not just a task, but an enjoyable journey of discovery and play.
Theodoros Galanos is the Advanced Design Lead at Aurecon and the founder of Architext - a semantic text to layout generator that produces architectural designs directly from natural language.
Theodoros specialises in developing AI solutions for the built environment that generate, extract, collect, and articulate Design Intelligence. He is recognised as a world leader in machine learning for AEC design.
As an Advanced Design Lead at Aurecon, his current work focuses on large language models and bespoke AI workflows to produce meaningful and measurable outcomes across a large variety of design, engineering and advisory applications.
Theodoros is also a PHD Candidate with the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta with a focus on researching, prototyping, testing, and implementing exciting new ideas and directions for designing systems that allow the articulation of design intelligence through semantic generation.
He is world renowned for the creation of Architext - a semantic text to layout generator that produces architectural designs directly from natural language. He is also an active supporter the open-source community to democratise access to knowledge, data, and tools needed to solve complex problems in the built environment.
This conversation will be facilitated by Bonnie Shaw, a co-founder of Place Intelligence and the DiD.
Bonnie is a respected leader in data informed design, emerging technologies, and adaptive leadership. She is the co-founder of Place Intelligence and the Data informed Design community. Bonnie was a 2021 finalist in the Women in AI awards and was recognised as one of 25 global leaders in the 2023 AI Visionary Awards. A trained landscape architect and urban designer, Bonnie helped to establish and lead Australia's first (and multi-award winning) Smart Cities Office at the City of Melbourne.
This event is online only and will run for approximately 1hr
