Event description

Is this workshop for you?

This workshop is specifically designed for staff in the telecommunications industry and for a variety of roles including designers, developers, policy officers, content producers and marketing/communications staff.

How has this come about?

In 2021, the Centre For Accessibility (CFA) Australia undertook a project to improve the accessibility of websites and apps provided by the Telecommunications sector. The deliverables of this project included providing Telstra, Optus, Belong, Amaysim and Vodafone with individual audit reports based on the accessibility of consumer-based website and app content.  This workshop discusses the general findings of the project and upskills staff in the telecommunications sector on how they can make their content more accessible.

What will the workshop cover?

This workshop includes:

  • How people with disability access your content: includes a hands-on practical exercise of using a screen reader
  • The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 overview: a guide to the definitive world standard in digital access
  • WCAG: a role-based approach: explore how the standard relates to different organisational roles
  • Telcos for All report: a discussion into the key issues found and how to address them.
  • Finding and addressing issues: key guidance on how to check your content and a practical exercise on how to fix issues as they appear.
  • The future: with two new versions of WCAG on the horizon and other access developments, this final session will look at what’s coming and how to prepare.

Thanks to ACCAN and participating carriers!

This project was funded by a grant from the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN). The operation of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network is made possible by funding provided by the Commonwealth of Australia under section 593 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. This funding is recovered from charges on telecommunications carriers.

Registration closes Friday June 4 at 7pm AEST.
