[WORKSHOP HALF-DAY]: Dignity, Autonomy and Human Rights
Event description
About the workshop:
Knowing how to translate our skills and knowledge into action is essential for getting the outcomes we want when we advocate for ourselves or others.
In this workshop we will explore clear steps to take and ways to use existing structures and policy to advocate specifically to uphold dignity, autonomy and human rights.
Who this workshop is for:
This workshop is for people with lived experience of mental distress, social issues or injustice who are advocating at the individual level – for themselves or another person. This could be in a formal lived experience role or as a family member, friend or kin.
Attendees must have foundational knowledge of lived experience principles and theory as we will be building on pre-existing knowledge and skillsets.
Themes covered:
- Upholding dignity, autonomy and human rights for ourselves when accessing support.
- How to advocate for yourself/others via SACAT.
- Understanding y(our) rights under the mental health act + sharing this wisdom with others.
- Ways to organise with/as a community of people with lived experience.
- How to take action at an individual level.
Structure of the day:
This is an interactive facilitated workshop that will include presentation of information by the facilitator(s), large and small group discussions and reflective exercises. The knowledge, skills and diverse experiences of participants will be drawn on to create an environment of dialogue, shared learning and community.
Workshop facilitator:
The lead facilitator for this workshop will be Emrys Temple-Heald (He/Him/They), Peer Project Worker.

*If you have not registered for the 'Sharing Stories Safely' online module, or have not completed this previously with LELAN, we encourage you to do so.
The 'Sharing Stories Safely' content will encourage reflection on how we manage our own needs and boundaries but will also explore strategies for caring for others when sharing our stories. This will provide a foundation to work from leading into the workshop days. For more information or to register for this online please click here.
